A successful 7th International DSM Conference

The 7th International Dependency Structure Matrix (DSM) Conference, Seattle took place in Seattle, Washington, hosted by the Boeing Company, and co-sponsored by the  PMIG-A&D SIG (Project Management Institute - Aerospace and Defense Specific Interest Group). This was be the first time the workshop has been held outside of a “Cambridge” setting as in the previous six workshops, hosted by academic institutions, which have laid the groundwork for this initial “conference style” hosting by industry.

The conference was tailored towards the topic “Situational Awareness: Discovering the Dependencies”, and represented this in the design of five groups that represent the breadth of the technology and its industrial application.

Group A - Industrial Applications (Systems Eng. & Project Mgmt.)

  • Automotive
  • Architectural Engineering & Construction
  • Aerospace
  • Software
  • Oil & Gas Exploration
  • Healthcare
  • Other

Group B - Research Trends

  • Systems Engineering
  • Project Management
  • Organization Design

Group C - Extensions to Complementary Modeling Methods

  • Process Modeling
  • Scheduling
  • Critical Chain
  • Risk Analysis
  • Cost Analysis

Group D - Organization Design

  • Organization Structures
  • Motivation / Compensation
  • Learning Curve
  • Language

Group E - DSM Software Products

  • Prototype
  • Commercially Available

During the first day of the Conference, an exhibition room for demonstrations and posters related to the DSM technology was available, along with a room for DSM tutorials. At the beginning of the second day, senior executives from the automotive and aerospace industries addressed the need for breakthrough achievements to not only individual goals but to the goal of flawless execution of large scale integration projects. This was followed by the six parallel technology groups that also continued through the second and third day.

Overall, 42 institutions, 43 presentations, and 9 different DSM software products were part of the conference. We would like to thank all participants for their contributions, thoughts, and discussions!
